Kornél Hamvai’s picaresque comedy is written from the perspective of a meek, honest executioner who leaves the countryside to come to the Paris of the French Revolution, offering a unique, distorted view of the city. Even in the shadows of death, people in this chaotic city care only about themselves. Over the course of this brutally amusing play, everything we have ever thought about morals and the workings of a world in traditional terms is subject to re-evaluation. In recent years, this contemporary Hungarian play received perhaps the highest praise from critics and audiences alike. The festival introduces an English-language performance of the play.
